If you or a loved one are in immediate danger, call 911 immediately. Suicidal ideation, sometimes referred to as suicidal thoughts, describes thoughts, fantasies, ideas or images related to committing suicide. Contrary to common belief, depression and suicidal thoughts are not limited to adults, but symptoms and warning signs are often different in teens. As a parent, caregiver or friend, the most important thing you can do to support a loved one who is struggling is to learn to recognize what suicidal ideation is, what it looks like in teens, and how to intervene. Passive vs. Active Suicidal Ideation For teens, thoughts of suicide can range from fleeting to making actual plans to end their life. For this reason, mental health professionals discuss suicidal ideation in terms of being either passive or active. Passive suicidal ideation about suicide includes experiencing vague ideas about committing suicide. Suicide is viewed as a possible way to end the pain, but usually, no action is taken. Active suicidal ideation is when a teen experiences persistent thoughts of suicide and continues to feel hopeless. When the ideation is active, a teen begins to take steps to carry out a suicide attempt. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the second leading cause of death for children, teens, and young adults between the ages of 10 and 24.   Teen Suicide Statistics What Causes Suicidal Thinking in Teens?   Suicidal ideation in teens is often caused by untreated depression or drug misuse and always needs to be taken seriously. Suicidal thoughts and depression often have many causes. Social difficulties, stress, academic pressures, and other concerns facing teens may contribute to suicidal ideation. Other risk factors include: Poor social relationshipsLack of family supportPhysical or sexual abuseSubstance and alcohol misuseHealth issuesBullying Genetic factors can play a role in depression and suicide risk as well. Teen that experience suicidal thoughts are often more likely to have family members who have died by suicide.?? The Dangers of Untreated Depression in Teens Warning Signs of Suicidal Thoughts There are quite a few signs that your teenager may be experiencing suicidal ideation. Be on the lookout for: Isolation and withdrawing from social contact, especially if its suddenBeing self-destructive or engaging in risk-taking behaviorsLooking for and/or acquiring means to commit suicide, such as getting a gun or a lot of medicationExtreme mood swingsFrequently talking about death or dyingSaying things like, I wish I were dead or I wish I had never been bornGiving away possessions for no particular reasonExpressing hopelessness or a feeling of being trapped with no way outChanges in sleeping, eating or other patternsMaking a point to say goodbye to peopleBeginning to use alcohol and/or drugs, or using them more frequentlyChanging obvious characteristics of their personalityBecoming extremely agitated, upset, depressed and/or anxious Remember, warning signs can be different for every individual, and some teens keep these thoughts and feelings to themselves. If you feel like your teenager is showing any of these signs or are not acting like themselves, be sure to consult your physician as soon as possible. Early intervention is important with any mental illness, and if suicide is something your teen is considering, its an emergency situation.   Teen Suicide Warning Signs and Prevention An Example of Suicidal Ideation Ivana, age 15, feels very sad when her best friend moves away and she experiences a deep sense of loneliness and insecurity. One night she finds herself thinking about suicide as a way to end the painful feelings she is having. She pictures herself taking a bottle of pills and drifting into a deep sleep she will not wake up from. When she wakes up the next day her suicidal ideation has changed, she knows it’s an option but is feeling better and decides to call a friend she hasn’t spoken to in a while. What to Do If a teen is experiencing suicidal thoughts, there are steps that parents, friends and guardians can take. For parents: Keep guns and prescription drugs away from children and teens.Watch for signs of substance use and get help immediately if you suspect there is a problem.Talk openly with your teen and let them know that you recognize their pain.Be supportive, understanding and nonjudgmental.Know the warning signs of suicide and depression. Address Untreated Mental Illness If your teen has symptoms of depression, anxiety or another psychiatric condition, talk to your childs pediatrician. While most people with mental health conditions do not attempt suicide, having an undiagnosed or untreated condition along with other risk factors can make suicide more likely. Never Ignore or Make Light of Suicide Threats Dont dismiss suicidal talk as typical teen drama. If a child is making comments such as I might as well kill myself or I wish I was dead, you need to listen and acknowledge their pain. Let them know that you understand that they are hurting, you are there to offer support and you will help them get the help that they need. Get Them the Help They Need If you are a parent or guardian, talk to your childs pediatrician and get a referral to a professional mental health provider. Your childs doctor or therapist may recommend psychotherapy, medications and lifestyle changes that can help reduce the risk of suicide. If you are a teen and you are concerned that your friend is thinking about suicide: Take signs of suicide seriously.Encourage your friend to talk to their doctor or a trusted adult.Talk to a teacher, parent or another adult about your friend and your concerns. An important question to ask is what really is liberation, and who does it apply to? Liberation is defined as â€Å"an act of setting someone free from imprisonment, slavery or oppression† (dictionary.com). The importance of liberation is having ‘freedom’ from any subjugation, but that freedom has been taken away slowly, and instead hurdling forward towards a time where capitalism is more important than freedom and equity. The Importance of the Personal Development Purpose to Citizenship Education I believe there is an immense responsibility on a Social Studies teacher to develop good and responsible students who value their identity and citizenship. The Alberta Social Studies curriculum emphasizes that, â€Å"the dynamic relationship between citizenship and identity forms the basis for skills and learning outcomes in the program of studies† (Alberta Education 2005, p. 3). How a teacher chooses to explore the relationship between citizenship and identity can greatly influence how the Alberta Social Studies curriculum is taught. I believe good teachers possess a clear vision of education and what it will do for their students. The child’s mind is an extraordinary topic, we seek to understand how a child learns to walk, how he or she process the world around them, how they acquire language, and how they recognize a mothers face etc. Jean Piaget heavily influenced the field of cognitive development. He believed cognitive developmental was a long progression from the illogical child to a mature adult. Piaget argued that between birth and the age of 14, children go through four main stages: sensory motor period, pre-operational period, the period of concrete operations and the period of formal operations. My first interview tested the pre-operational period, which is roughly between the ages of two and seven. During this stage, the child shows that he or she cannot master complex operations. My second interview involved a ten year, she would be classified into the concrete operations stage. The concrete operational stage begins at the age of seven and continues until around the age of eleven. The ch ild in the concrete operational stage has the ability to reverse relationships. They gain an understanding of reversibility. Piaget studied reversible relationships; this is a relationship that is reversible when it is logically necessary. Analysis Of The Book The Letters From An American Farmers

Conflicts in America Literature has a tendency to draw from ones’ surroundings to tell a story or make a statement. Authors use their observation skills to make pieces of work great. The idea that literature reflects society is an idea that can trace back many years. In Crevecoeur’s Letters from an American Farmers, James the farmers is on an exhibition through the American colonies. Crevecoeur is able to share what he sees and experiences in his own life through the character of James. His letters define the culture and attitudes of what being an American is. Each letter represents and tells the story of something different. There is a strong sense of pride in one letter; however, there is shame present in the other. In the beginning letters, it describes what being an American is and the pride associated with this. Letters towards the end share a saddened view. Crevecoeur helped to bring light to the conflicting greatness and the history and development of America. Wh at does it mean to be an American? This a true question that has been asked and evaluated for some time. In letter number three, there is a positive outlook on what it means to be an American. He opens the letter with saying â€Å"he must necessarily feel a share of national pride, when he views the chain of settlements† (Crevecoeur 309). From how Crevecoeur describes it, life could be considered charming and happy. Why, when she – again rightfully – assumed he was just after the money and had fled the moment the documents were dry, did she believe he wasn’t the murderer? As if she could read my thoughts, Margaret turned her eyes to me. â€Å"I can always tell when someone is lying,† she said simply. â€Å"It’s a†¦ gift, I suppose.† I thought about what Bram had said – how Margaret had hurt him just by looking at him. I touched my ring, thinking of the witch, Emily, who’d cast a spell over it to protect me from the sun. Was it possible that Margaret had powers, too? I opened my mouth to ask her, but tears were leaking from her eyes. Now was not the time for an interrogation. Taking a deep breath I rose and went over to what was left of the bodies, trying to discover a clue or reason for the massacre. The other half of Mrs. Sutherland’s body was sprawled on its belly next to the couch. One arm was stretched out, as if she were trying to get up, trying to crawl to her youngest daughter. Bridget’s throat had been torn out and all of her limbs had been snapped in half. Her face was untouched, however. In death she looked like the little girl she really was, the soft rose of her cheeks slowly fading to an icy white, her lips opened slightly as if she were asleep. Her eyes, wide and green and clear as a china doll’s, were still open in shock. I gently put my hand over her face and pulled her lids down. Lydia was frozen with a hand over her face, like an ancient Roman tomb carving, dignified even in death. I turned away from her ruined torso, the white bones of her back sticking through her cracked chest. Winfield looked like a big, slain animal, a buffalo brought down in its prime. There were surprisingly neat gashes down his side, like something had been trying to butcher him. Finally, I went over to Margaret and put my arms around her, turning her head so she wasn’t staring at the scene of carnage anymore. Recycling Essay Example RECYCLING. Recycling is an ancient practice with many modern applications. It refers to the recovery and reuse of materials from spent products. In recent years recycling has become a major part of environmental policy, mainly because of the increased costs of solid- and hazardous-waste disposal, the scarcity of natural resources, and the growing concern over polluted land, water, and air. There are two types of recycling operations: internal and external. Internal recycling is the reuse in a manufacturing process of materials that are a waste product of that process. Internal recycling is common in the metals industry. External recycling is the reclaiming of materials from a product that has been worn out or considered obsolete. An example of external recycling is the collection of old newspapers and magazines for the manufacture of newsprint or other paper products. In some areas, industries are required to pretreat wastewater before it is funneled into a waterway. In homes, wastewater is sent to a sewage-treatment plant, where it is purified, recycled, and put back into the water-supply system. Many gardeners recycle organic, biodegradable kitchen scraps by mixing them with leaves and grass clippings in a compost mound. There the organic waste decomposes and is biochemically transformed into usable soil. Successful recycling programs depend on several factors. There must be a general awareness of the problems caused by solid-waste disposal and an effective, inexpensive method for separating and collecting the recyclable materials. It also must be economically possible for industries to use and market recycled materials. In 1976 the United States Congress passed the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, encouraging states to formulate solid-waste recovery plans. Many states set up special departments to assist local communities in their recycling efforts. Some communities adopted legislation that gives consumers the option of returning containers in exchange for a small deposit paid at the time of purchase. In the United States, more than 150 million tons of solid waste are generated every year. This amounts to more than 3 pounds (1.4 kilograms) per person per day. In metropolitan areas, the daily production of solid waste is usually higher. Residents of New York City, for example, discard 26,000 tons of solid waste daily almost 7 pounds (3.2 kilograms) for each resident. Domestic recycling efforts usually involve the salvage of materials associated with disposable products packages, bottles, and labels. The cost of disposing of the solid-waste materials mainly paper, glass, aluminum, and steel has steadily increased. In many cases the land used for garbage disposal, known as landfill areas, is too valuable to use as a dumping ground. As existing landfills reach their capacity, many municipalities turn to recycling programs as a relatively inexpensive alternative to landfill disposal. Some cities also solve energy-shortage problems and the need to dispose of growing amounts of organic w astes and garbage by converting waste into energy. This is done by pyrolysis, the incineration of refuse with a deficiency of air. While pyrolysis permits recovery of certain fuel gases, chemicals, and heat energy, it can also contribute to air pollution. Science

The issue that started the tensions between the North and South, was the issue of the expanding of slavery. In the North, was the increasingly powerful abolitionist movement, and in the South, came a newly militant defense of slavery, and from the West, came a series of controversies that would ultimately tear the fragile union apart. Another tension was when David Wilmot of Pennsylvania, introduced an amendment to the appropriation bill prohibiting slavery in any territory acquired from Mexico. This amendment passed in the house, but not in the senate. This debate would be called up repeatedly for years. The Southern militants contended that all Americans had equal rights in the new territories, including the right to move their slaves into them. There were many proposals and many debates about where slavery should be allowed and where it shouldnt be allowed. This drew tensions to a hair. One believed that statehood could become the solution to the issue of slavery in the territories. As long as the new lands remained territories, the federal government was responsible for deciding the fate of slavery within them. When they became states, the state government should then be allowed to decide whether or not to have slavery allowed. This didnt work, and now tempers were now rising to dangerous levels. This crisis continued until the Compromise of 1850 and 1852. This didnt last for long. By the end of 1860, the Union snapped. Review of the Literature Transactional leadership theory has the potential to develop innovative models in the context of modern and future management practices. Some principal concepts entailed in the theory are: 1. People can perform optimally when the commands are clear and definite. 2. A justifiable system of punishment and reward motivates the workers. 3. Monitoring the subordinates is an imperative so that the business expectations are fulfilled. 4. Causes of Different Types of Crimes Deviant behaviors are those behaviors that society does not like because the society does not see the behavior as a normal behavior for that society. Like gay marriages or cross dressers. Deviant behavior that is criminal is when the behavior becomes harmful to those in the society. Like murdering a person. A behavior that is criminal but not deviant would be driving under the influence or being intoxicated in public. A behavior that is deviant but not criminal would be a teenager with piercings and tattoos all over their body. A behavior that is both deviant and criminal would be spousal abuse. Society determines which behaviors are deviant and which are criminal. Governments or even individuals can convince local authorities that a deviant act is criminal or vice versa. Criminal laws vary because the laws are imposed by the local authorities so the laws will be different from city to city, state to state, or even town to town. Criminologists utilize three primary sources of data that provide information on the nature and extent of crime. Identify and explain each of these three different sources of crime data. Also, assess the strengths and weaknesses of each source. Finally, provide an example of a research question that a criminologist may be interested in examining and then explain which source of crime data the researcher would need to utilize to answer his/her question. The three primary sources of data that can provide information on the nature and extent of crime are (1) crimes that get reported to the authorities, this includes the uniform crime reports and the national incident based reporting system (2) victimization surveys which includes the national crime victimization survey and (3) the self-report surveys that include the monitoring the future studies. The uniform crime reports are recorded by the FBI and include all the crimes that have been reported to the authorities and how many arrests are made. The report that the FBI makes is sectioned out by city and county by the most serious crimes that occurred. These are called part I crimes and part II crimes Part I crimes include things like rape, robbery and burglary whereas part II crimes include sex crimes and other types of crimes not defined in the part I crimes. A strength for the UCR is the way that the data is collected makes the UCR a good indicator of patterns in crime. A weakness for the UCR is that many crimes are not reported to authorities and therefore do not get counted. The national incident based reporting system goes a step further than the UCR does in that it requires local authorities to provide a report of the arrest that includes details of the incident and also information on the victim and the criminal. These reports are sent to the FBI for only certain offenses that include not only the offenses that the URC covers but also includes white collar crimes and drug offenses. A strength of the national incident based reporting system is that it includes more details on the crimes than the UCR does which will hopefully improve how accurate the crime data is. A weakness of the NIBRS is that it only reports crime that have been reported to authorities it does not include crimes that have taken place but not reported by the victim. The national crime victimization survey is a survey that the census bureau does for the bureau of justice statistics on a yearly basis. The survey collects information from individuals about crimes even if they were not reported to the police. The survey collects information on the victim, offender and the crime that took place. People that are raped are more likely to report on the survey the crime instead of reporting it to the police because of fear, shame or embarrassment. A strength of the NCVS is that it includes crimes that are not reported to police by using a survey once a year. This allows the NCVS to give a more current picture of the annual crime that is taking place. A weakness for the NCVS is that it relies too much on the person taking the survey and hopes that the person remembers the crime correctly. If they dont remember it correctly then the crime gets reported incorrectly. Monitoring the future studies is a type of self-report survey that allows information on crimes to be collected without the person being identified as the offender. It is used to find out criminal histories and also find out about the participants background to see if links can be made between childhood crimes and drug use or between bad grades and crime. A strength of the self-report survey is that the person remains anonymous so the person is more likely to report drug abuse crimes and other crimes that have not been reported to the authorities. A weakness of the self-report survey is that people with criminal records are not willing to admit to their criminal activity because they do not want to go back to jail. A criminologist may be interested in looking at how to reduce juvenile probation rates. The criminologist could use the data from a self-report survey like the monitoring the future survey to look at crimes that have been committed by the youth and how those can relate to the attitudes of the survey takers to see if there is a link between youth crimes and probation rates and how to reduce those crimes. Rape is one of the most misunderstood and feared crimes. Identify and discuss the causal factors that explain why men commit rape. There are five factors that can explain why men commit rape. (1)Evolutionary, Biological factors, (2) Socialization factors (3) Mental factors (4) Learned behavior and (5) sexual attraction to their victims. Each of these have explanations as to why men commit rape as we will see. The evolutionary, biological factors go back to the days of the cave man. In this factor it is believed the reason a man rapes a women is because it is instinctual or inbreed within him from prehistoric times. Back then if a species was to survive it had to produce offspring and rape of a woman was a way to help ensure the male that his genes were spread and that he had a lot of offspring to keep the species alive. Sort of like the survival of the fittest only with a sexual twist. Males that were more aggressive towards women had a better chance of having offspring. The socialization factors leads to men that are taught by society that in some cases being aggressive and raping a woman is ok especially if they get turned down by a woman. Men who have grown up believing that no means yes are the ones that are the most likely to rape a woman. They have been taught by other males that it is ok to be rough with a woman in this case because it is really what she wants to happen. Other men just rape because it makes them feel like a big man or like they are the real man in their warped minds. Mental factors that may cause rape include mental illness. Many rapist are mentally ill and do not realize that they are. Some have a narcissistic personality disorder that causes them to rape because they want to satisfy their own needs and feel dominant over the woman. In the learned behavior factor it is believed that most rapists have been abused sexually themselves sometime in the past and have learned this behavior from those experiences or have learned the behavior from their friends or from watching porn. Some men rape because they feel a sexual attraction to their victims that they cannot control. Within the sexual motivation factor it is believed that older rapists are more violent with their victims than younger rapists are because the older rapists are motivated by other factors than sexual attraction. Men commit rape for various reasons from wanting to feel like they are in control and are powerful to just wanting to have sex. Others commit rape because they have no control over themselves such as in the case of someone with a mental illness. Others learn how to rape from the abuse they have suffered in the past. In any case rape is rape and it is wrong. Explain the three causal theories of white-collar crime and explain which one best explains the Madoff Affair and why? The three causal theories of white collar crime are the rationalization/neutralization view, the corporate culture view and the self-control view. Criminals often use these theories to help ease their conscience and help them live with themselves. Our textbook says that rationalizations allow offenders to meet their financial needs without compromising their values. A lot of criminals start committing crimes when they are very young but with the rationalization view an offender would need to be an adult and be in a position where they could take advantage of the business that they work for in order to commit a white collar crime. They find themselves in a situation where they need money and commit the crime in hopes that they do not get caught. By the offender being an adult most of the time they have people in their lives that they do not want to disappoint. By rationalizing the reasons they committed the crime such as needing money to pay bills, etc. it lets them be able to live with the crime that they have committed. In the neutralization view there are three top reasons people use to help them deal with the guilt of the crime they have committed, (1)everyone else does it, (2) its not my fault or responsibility, and (3) no one is hurt except the insurance companies, and they are wealthy. Like the rationalization view the neutralization view helps the criminals deal with the guilt of committing a crime. It is a way to mentally cope and continue to live with what they have done. A lot of people take the stance of its not my fault or responsibility people today want to have money and enjoy life but they do not want to work hard to succeeded they want everything handed to them. When this does not happen they turn to white collar crimes so that they can continue to live the life they are used to and resort to using these two views to help them mentally cope with what they have done. I can imagine that living with the knowledge that you have committed a crime especially if that crime is against someone else it has to be hard to deal with that fact every day if you have any kind of conscience at all. The corporate culture view compares businesses with culture. Businesses that promote white collar crime and look the other way when that crime happens is like a culture looking the other way on an act that is happening in a society that they do not agree with. Our textbook states that according to the corporate culture view, some business enterprises cause crime by placing excessive demands on employees, while maintaining a business climate tolerant of employee deviance. To me this is like a big corporation like Windstream that I use to work for. They would put unreasonable demands on the employees that lead to some of the employees committing crimes against the company, but then just look the other way when someone in management would do something that was equally wrong or sometimes even the same crime. Most businesses today want to make a profit no matter what the cost is. When these businesses instill in their employees that making this profit no matter how it is done is a good th ing this is when you end up with white collar crimes. The self-control view takes the stance that white collar crime does not happen as often as people think it does because businesses hire people that have a measure of self-control that keeps them from committing a white collar crime. Most white collar criminals want something for nothing. They want the financial reward without the effort of work to earn those rewards. This is the same with any crime such as burglary. The thief when he breaks into a house wants to profit from the theft without having to do a lot of work to earn the same amount of money. I feel like the rationalization/neutralization view would best explain the Madoff Affair because Bernard Madoff claimed that he merely wanted to satisfy his clients expectations of high returns and that their demands simply could not be met by legal means. In this statement he was rationalizing the reasons for committing the crimes that he did. He knew that the crimes he had committed over the years were wrong but he did not want to have to live with the guilt of those crimes so he came up with reasons for the crimes that in his mind were valid reasons of why he had to do what he did. Each of the three views of white collar crime has their own way of easing a criminals mind about what crime they have committed. Such as everybody does it or lets just look the other way because greed is good and finally a criminal that wants quick benefits with minimal effort.
